Imagination Station
The Imagination Station is an area in our gallery dedicated to having a permanent but ever changing interactive exhibit for visiting children and families to expand their understanding of the Marfa culture and Big Bend environment. Changing exhibits challenge the participants to explore a unique aspect of Marfa and environs through an art experience. For example, there could be photographic display of the Judd Boxes that would pair with a fun artistic exercise using paper origami to better understand the concept of minimalism. Our station draws from current exhibitions in town and derives the inspiration for the content of the learning experiences.
This station also addresses the geography, animal or plant life, history etc. of the Big Bend Region. We present a thoughtful art project that complements the information offered to be explored. A display of animal bones and skulls are great to draw but also give the participant some insight into the animals that inhabit the area. Collections of native plants like prickly pear or other cactus can be available for the gallery guide to explain the wonderful geometry of these plants. Drawing rocks and minerals can also help to explore the rare geology of this area.
We supply materials and a “gallery guide,” a trained artist/educator who supports the participants through the art experience. The Imagination Station is open during gallery hours Wednesday to Thursday 12-4 p.m and is located at the MSA Gallery: 106 San Antonio Street, Marfa.
